What Are Hemorrhoids?
Hemorrhoids or piles are a common condition which causes the veins and blood vessels in the anal region to swell and become extremely painful.
They usually occur in pregnant women as well as adult men and women in their 50s and 60s. Today though, even children are known to develop hemorrhoids thanks to unhealthy diets filled with sugary beverages and fast foods.
The main cause of piles or hemorrhoids is constipation. When there is little or no fiber in your diet, the stools become dry and hard and as they pass out of the intestines, they abrade the delicate veins surrounding the anus leading to swelling and varicosity.
The reason why hemorrhoids are hard to treat is because each time you strain while passing the bowel movement, the fissures and swollen blood vessels get further irritated.
This can lead to extreme pain, irritation and even bleeding. Apart from constipation, the following factors may be responsible for hemorrhoids:
- Straining during bowel movements
- Sedentary lifestyle
- Standing for long periods
- Sitting on cold, hard substances
- Liver disease
Thankfully, apart from conventional remedies, you can use tea tree oil and other anti-inflammatory essential oils for all of the above hemorrhoids symptoms.
How Can Essential Oils Help Treat Hemorrhoids?
Tend to Get Worse Over Time
Hemorrhoids may be benign but they tend to get worse with time. Therefore, they need to be treated as soon as they occur. The best treatment for hemorrhoids is prevention.
Good Topical Treatment
Essential oils for hemorrhoids can be made a part of the topical treatment as they help soothe itching, irritation and pain and also stop bleeding and swelling. Many essential oils such as tea tree oil for hemorrhoids have antiseptic properties.
Sooth the Mind to Relax Muscles
These properties help fight infection and harmful bacteria in the anal area. Aromatherapy oils also soothe the mind and heal the body by working directly on the person’s emotional and physical state. By diffusing certain oils, the sphincter muscles get complete relaxation giving you much needed pain relief.
Essential oils for hemorrhoids treatment are quickly absorbed into the skin and travel to the veins and blood vessels, acting as emollients. You can add these oils to Sitz baths or use them as cold or warm compresses to promote healing.
Why Use Tea Tree Oil For Hemorrhoids?
Powerful Antibacterial and Antiseptic
Tea tree oil is a powerful antibacterial and antiseptic agent. It destroys the bacteria and prevents the growth of microbes. This wonderful healing remedy works by destroying the cell walls of the microorganisms and speed up the healing of internal and external hemorrhoids. It also deactivates the bacteria by disabling the protein inside them.
Tea tree oil contains many infection fighting compounds but the main ones are terpinen-4-ol, linalool and alpha terpineol. These compounds work on the varicose veins of the anal region killing the bacteria and soothing the swelling and inflammation.
Anti-inflammatory and Analgesic
Tea tree oil also has an anti-inflammatory and analgesic action that provides long lasting pain relief. The oil is very potent so you need to dilute it in some olive, coconut or almond oil before applying topically.
How To Use Tea Tree Oil For Hemorrhoids?
After a bowel movement, sit in a Sitz bath for 20 minutes. Dry the anal area with a soft, clean tissue. Apply Tea tree oil on the anus. As stated above, dilute the oil first with some carrier oil. Repeat the remedy three times a day or as needed.
In bath water
Add 10 drops of tea tree oil or any other essential oil for hemorrhoids to hot bath water. Soak in the bath for 20 minutes or until the water cools.
As a compress
Add a few drops of tea tree oil in water. Soak a clean panty liner in it and use this as a compress to soothe the inflamed anal veins. Pull your briefs or panty over the liner to hold the compress in place. Do this at bedtime so the compress works on the hemorrhoids overnight.
Apart from tea tree oil for hemorrhoids, you can also use other essential oils for treating this condition. Oils like Helichrysum, Lavender and Peppermint oils can be used for soothing the inflamed anal area.
Treating Constipation With Massage Oils
If chronic constipation is the reason behind your hemorrhoids, you must treat this underlying issue first. Drink plenty of water and eat a fiber rich diet. Also use the following oils for massage as they can prevent constipation:
- Black pepper
- Sweet Fennel
- Sweet Orange
- Sweet Marjoram
To use: Mix the oils with a massage lotion or carrier oil and massage in gentle circular motion all over the abdominal area. Also massage the hips, lower back and spine all the way to the anal region.
