Essential Oil Safety

The issue of safety is of utmost importance when selecting essential oils during pregnancy. Select oils from a reputable producer that are authentic, plant derived, preferably organic or wildcrafted, unadulterated essential oils.

The oils should not contain any artificial ingredients, fillers or colors and fragrances which dilute the properties of the oil. Many essential oils are also contraindicated during pregnancy. I highlight  these oils later in this guide.

Test First

Pure and concentrated essential oils can sometimes be harsh on the delicate skin. Therefore, it is very important to try a patch test on a small area of the skin prior to using the essential oils for pregnancy stretch marks or massage. If there is any tingling sensation, discontinue use immediately.

  • ½ cup baking soda

  • 1 tbsp Grapeseed oil
  • 4 drops Lavender oil
  • 3 drops Geranium oil
  • 2 drops Roman Chamomile oil

Mix all the oils well. Take a few drops of the blend and apply in circular gentle motion on the lower back of the woman in labor.

Labor Relaxation Diffuser Blend

Diffuse the following oil blend during labor:

  • ½ cup water
  • 3 drops Frankincense oil
  • 5 drops each Ylang ylang and Lavender oils

Place the diffuser where the mother in labor can smell the oils. Continue massaging her back.

These oils reduce pain, help the mother relax and also reduce duration of labor.

Breast Massage Oil

For softening dry, cracked nipples, massage the following blend on the breasts during pregnancy and in between breast feeding:

  • 2 tsp Sweet Almond oil or Grapeseed oil
  • 1 drop Rose oil

Mix together and massage on nipples. To soothe and condition nipples, apply some honey with calendula, chickweed and buttermilk or comfrey to the nipples between feeding.
